Why Choose Us?
Phase 1 - Comparing the frameworks of Chaise Longues
- 1. The 'Aber Chaise' (Needle Rock)
- Pros:
- Hand-made from solid hardwood: often beech, oak or sapele.
- Sustainably sourced: selected for its durability, strength and workability.
- Hand-crafted using traditional joinery by local craftsmen.
- Tailored design: frame created specifically for comfort, proportion, and aesthetic appeal.
- Design preference: Choose your size, and handedness.
- Known provenance: with evidence of authenticity.
- Cons:
- Heavy due to solid construction, but also a mark of quality.
- Expensive.
- 2. Victorian / Edwardian Antique Chaises (Auction or Antiques Market)
- Pros:
- Timber quality is good; often made from mahogany, walnut, or beech.
- Handmade with mortise and tenon joints; often using adapted or reused solid wood.
- Character and patina: aged wood has a warmth and aesthetic appeal.
- Cheaper than a bespoke piece.
- Cons:
- Structural fatigue: dried glue can loosen joints over time. Hidden cracks or woodworm can compromise integrity.
- Repairs can be costly and are unknown until stripped down. Frames may have been bodged or altered previously.
- Unknown history: may not withstand another 100 years as inheriting all wear and tear of previous use.
- Inconsistent sizing: often with lower seats and shorter backs. Standards of comfort are higher today than previous eras.
- 3. Mass-Produced Chaise Longues (Typically Imported from China)
- Pros:
- Cheap to buy and widely available.
- Fashionable: designed for current trends.
- Easy to move: lightweight.
- Cons:
- Made with cheap materials e.g. plywood or MDF, with minimal joinery, often stapled together.
- Not built to last and often creak, warp, or break within a few years.
- Not easy to repair or not worth fixing when they do fail.
- Unknown sustainability: wood, glue and labour.
